Hayden Panettiere Dead at 36: What We Know So Far
Hayden Panettiere has died. She was 36.
Her representative confirmed the news to ABC News on Sunday, August 16, calling her “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her.” A cause of death hasn’t been released yet, and details are still coming in.
What We Know Right Now
According to TMZ, Panettiere and her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson had flown from Los Angeles over the weekend before she passed. Law enforcement sources have confirmed police responded to an incident involving her, and there’s an open investigation. Nothing official has been said about how she died, so treat early cause-of-death chatter online with caution until it’s confirmed.
This isn’t the first tragedy to hit her family. Her younger brother Jansen Panettiere died suddenly in 2023 at just 28, from a heart condition.
A Career That Started at Five
Panettiere started acting almost as soon as she could talk, landing soap opera roles on “One Life to Live” and “Guiding Light” as a kid. She broke through as a teenager in “Remember the Titans,” then became a household name playing indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on NBC’s “Heroes” starting in 2006.
From there she moved into music-driven drama with “Nashville,” playing country star Juliette Barnes for six seasons and picking up two Golden Globe nominations along the way. More recently she returned to horror with “Scream 4” and “Scream VI.”
Earlier this year, she published a memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” where she opened up about a difficult relationship with her mother, past abuse, and her long struggle with addiction and postpartum depression.
Tributes Are Already Rolling In
Fans and former co-stars have started sharing memories and condolences across social media. Expect that to build over the coming days as more people in the industry respond.
We’ll keep updating this piece as more confirmed details come out. For now, our thoughts are with her family.
